As I was recently reading through the book of Genesis, in particular, studying chapter 32 (you can read the chapter here) and the life of Jacob, I realized some surprisingly powerful lessons from a deceitful man, Jacob. The name Jacob means supplanter, one who grasps the heel, and underminer, and he lived up to his name. He stole his brother's birthright and blessing by deceiving his father, and then took off to live with his uncle to escape his brother's anger. He remained there for twenty years until God told him “Go back to the land of your fathers and to your relatives, and I will be with you.” (Gen. 31:3) The following chapter in Genesis narrates the journey of Jacob back to his homeland and is where those powerful lessons reside. ***** Jacob does not know if his brother's ... Fall Rhythms, Reads, and Recipes
As the air cools and the leaves start to crisp on the edges, fall makes herself known. This is the season we begin again enjoying warm drinks and meals, more soup, thicker blankets, cozy sweaters, and all the pumpkin recipes. I find there are definite shifts in my routines as the days grow shorter and the nights, longer. "He has made everything beautiful in its time." Ecclesiastes 3:11 Here is a peek into the fall rhythms, reads, and recipes shaping my life right now. RHYTHMS One of my absolute favorite things right now is this app: Read Scripture, by Francis Chan. The app takes you through the Bible in a year in a thematic, understandable way. It is supplemented with creative videos that explain each book and major theological themes in the Bible. Francis Chan says, "We are ... View Post
What to do When You are in a Spiritual Funk
Have you ever gone through a dry season in your walk with the Lord? You are going through the motions but your prayer and worship don't feel genuine. That has happened to me at times, and it can be discouraging. You may feel like you are in a desert. You are parched, wind-whipped, frayed around the edges, burned out, and begging for some refreshment. You desire to have those rivers of living waters flow through you. Here are some suggestions for what to do when you are in a spiritual funk. Listen to worship music. Play some praise music you love, songs you have worshiped along with before, or try some new tunes. Be honest with God. Confess to the Lord what you are feeling. He knows and He understands. Talk to a trusted friend. Share your struggle with another Christian ... View Post
Tips for How to Get Off the Crazy Train
I left my car running after parking it down the street. Not on purpose. My life felt harried, and on that particular day, even more so. After realizing what I had done, I knew I needed to figure out how to get off the crazy train. *** Right after I finished work that spring morning, I hurriedly left the house to run some errands. I had a huge list of things to do and places to go before returning to the house to check on the concrete work, and then pick my daughter up from school. Just after I came home to drop off some groceries and talk with the contractor, the cement truck arrived. I needed to move my car out of its way. I flew out the door knowing I didn't have much time to get some frozen food stored away before having to leave again to collect my daughter. I started the ... View Post
What I Learned This Summer
Friends, sun, sand, and sea, that sounds like a summer to me. ~ Unknown ***** Foggy mornings and warm, sunny afternoons are departing to make way for the season that transitions summer to winter. Tears of pride filled my eyes and spilled down my cheeks. Wow. It is something I will never forget. 2. I realized I love cold brew coffee. It is much less bitter and acidic and has a sweet, smooth taste. I ... View Post
A Simple Way to Make Chocolate Pot de Creme
My favorite dessert has always been chocolate mousse, that is until I tried chocolate pot de creme. Quite a few years ago I was trying to figure out which dessert to serve for Christmas, and I came across a recipe for pot de creme. I made it, and my family thought it was delicious! It has been our traditional Christmas dessert since then. Pot de creme also makes its appearance on our table for special occasions and occasionally when having friends over for dinner. Pot de creme is a loose French dessert custard dating back to the 17th century. The name means "pot of custard" or "pot of cream," which also refers to the porcelain cups in which the dessert is served. Pot de crème is made with eggs, egg yolks, cream, milk, and a flavor, often vanilla or chocolate. The milk and cream are ... View Post
