How to Leave a Lasting Legacy
Have you ever thought about what legacy you will leave when you die? Do you ever consider that the foundations you lay out now will affect those for future generations? Merriam-Webster definition of a legacy: something transmitted by or received from an ancestor or predecessor, or from the past. Your legacy is the by-product of your life; it is your children's heritage. *** My husband and I recently finished leading The Art of Marriage (small group study) and loved the last session called Love Always. It focuses on leaving a lasting legacy. Albert Mohler, a contributor to this marriage study, writes, "You are an ancestor to someone yet to come. If you live your life knowing you are an ancestor, that will change the way you make decisions, the way you live your life, the way ... View Post
Flourishing in Motherhood
*A guest post- My friend, Emily, began an online community dedicated to helping moms flourish in motherhood. I believe this community is so valuable! If you aren't in the throws of motherhood, I am positive that you know some women who are. Please enjoy her essay here about flourishing in motherhood. We arrived to our weekly homeschool group a few minutes late, as usual. No matter how highly I personally value punctuality, I have not been able to reliably get myself and six kids to destinations on time since my youngest was born nearly a year ago. With all my heart, I want to arrive on time, but I’m only one woman and there are quite a few personalities in my family that frequently prevent me from finding success in that quest. Still, every time I arrive somewhere late, I feel ... View Post
You are Worthy of the Fancy Soap
A few years ago, as the cooler winter months were turning to a warmer spring, I began folding up my sweaters to put away. I opened the cupboard to stack my sweaters and got a whiff of something lovely. I smiled as I recalled that scent. It came from a bag of French soaps I purchased while on a trip with my husband. The fancy soaps reminded me of that time in Paris, the cute little shops, and of romance. I closed the cupboard with a smile on my face. On a whim, about a week later, I pulled out that bag of soaps, smelled each one, and selected one to use in the shower. It felt like a guilty pleasure. Shouldn't I be using the practical soap, the kind we buy in bulk at Costco? Shouldn't I be saving this for some special day? Was I acting impetuously? Looking back now, I see how ridiculous ... How to Connect with Your Spouse in the Busy Days of Life
Let's chat about how to stay connected to your spouse when life seems so busy. Our lives can get full with careers, child rearing, household chores, errand-running, ministry, outside friends hobbies, and such. I wrote a post on the importance of Dating Your Spouse and then two posts on date ideas- see here and here, but what about the day-to-day connections? How do we keep our marriage fresh and alive when we aren't on dates or attending marriage conferences? How to do we maintain the spark? I read somewhere that the first taste of love can strike you like a thunderbolt; it feels like a flash of lightning with a simultaneous crash of thunder. I discovered after years of marriage that the sudden electricity and explosions in our heart we first feel don't stay. They fade ... View Post
The Comfort of Risotto
Let's chat about special recipes. What is the first food that comes to mind when you think of family? What is your signature dish? A signature dish would be that one recipe people think of when they think of you. It is something you often make and/or make well. My signature dish is risotto. Risotto is defined as a northern Italian rice dish cooked in a broth to a creamy consistency, but I define it as comfort. In my home, risotto means the comfort of my family gathered around the kitchen table or the comfort of homecoming- when my older daughter or son was back for a brief visit while in college. Risotto is the comfort of entertaining guests in my home for the first time, or the comfort of having friends return to break bread together. One time I brought the comfort to my ... View Post
